DarkAdapted — Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard” Login Item Error

Updated 01 November 2007

The below discussion only applies to you if you used DarkAdapted Pro 2.3 or earlier under Leopard. This error does not occur in DarkAdapted 2.3.1 or later, or under Mac OS X 10.4.9 or earlier.

Quick Fix for Experienced Users:

Simply open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, and remove any Login Items with names containing “DarkAdapted.”

How Does the Error Manifest Itself?

Most of DarkAdapted’s features work extremely well under Mac OS X 10.5 (“Leopard”). In fact, most of DarkAdapted Pro’s system-wide menu was re-written for Leopard compatibility. However, a late change to Mac OS 10.5 resulted in some users seeing the following terminal window when they login to their computers:

The above terminal window presents a couple of errors indicating “NSDocumentController Info.plist warning: The values of CFBundleTypeRole entries must be 'Editor', 'Viewer', 'None', or 'Shell'.” Closing the Terminal Window quits DarkAdapted.

This error occurs because DarkAdapted has been started as a Unix executable instead of as an application, due to a change that occurred late in Leopard’s development cycle.

While there is no way for the newer version of DarkAdapted to automatically fix this problem, it's easy to fix this error, which has been corrected in DarkAdapted 2.3.1.

How Do I Get Rid of the Error?

Overview | Illustrated Instructions

Experienced users will be able to do this in just a few seconds. Newer users may prefer the illustrated instructions.

To correct the error, simply open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, and remove any Login Items with names containing “DarkAdapted.” That’s it! You can add DarkAdapted again using the Preferences Window of DarkAdapted 2.3.1 or later.

Illustrated Instructions | Overview

1. First, select System Preferences from the Apple menu, as shown below:

2. When the System Preferences window opens, open and click on the Accounts preference pane. The Accounts preference pane is highlighted in the below illustration:

3. If necessary, click to select your Account name in the left-hand portion of this window, then click to select Login Items in the right-hand side of this window, as illustrated below:

Scroll through the listing if necessary, locating any entry that contains the text “DarkAdapted” in the “Item” column, and the text “Unix Executable File” in the “Kind” column. In the above illustration you see an entry that we have highlighted in red, named DarkAdapted X, of kind Unix Executable File. This is the cause of the error, and should be removed in order to fix the error.

If you see an entry named DarkAdapted X of kind Application, that is not an error. You may retain or delete that item as you wish.

To remove the DarkAdapted Unix Executable File, click once to select it in the list, then click the minus sign button (“–”) to remove it. Then close the Accounts window to save your changes.

4. Using DarkAdapted 2.3.1 or later, open DarkAdapted Pro’s Preferences Window, then check the Preference “Open at Login.”

That’s it!

Additional Details

This error can only occur if DarkAdapted 2.3 or earlier makes a change to DarkAdapted Pro’s Open at Login preference, while running on Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

The error occurs because Mac OS X attempts to open DarkAdapted X as a Unix Executable in the shell, rather than as an application process. No damage occurs as a result of this error. An additional error may be generated when you log out, indicating that preferences could not be saved. This is another manifestation of the same error.
